LAND USE PLAN

A Land Use Plan is:
  • A vision for land use for the future.
  • A set of goals representing the communities vision, values and perspective.
  • A series of objectives or guiding statements providing details on what will be done to meet the goals; and
  • A series of strategies that will define how and when each objective will be accomplished and who wil do it.

To Community Members, here are the Goals and Objectives that needs community input, we ask that you read the following and please provide your input and submit your comments below. Miigwetch

Goals: The Aundeck Omni Kaning people have an overarching vision to guide all of the band activities. The LUP is a cornersone of this and the primary goals of the LUP are:

  • To guide the orderly and sustainable development and protection of the land.
  • To secure resource based and other economic opportunities for self sufficiency.
  • To ensure new land uses are congruent and harmonious with current land uses and culturally traditional land uses.
  • To conserve and protect ecosystems and their part in the Aundeck Omni Kaning culture; and
  • To make the members of the community aware of the significance of the land and the importance of the land use plan.

Objectives: Objectives are required to achieve the Aundeck Omni Kaning land use goals and are more specific guiding statements that will detail what will be done to meet the goals.

  • Provide a balance between protection of the land and sustainable development.
  • To provide land use zones to support existing land use and identify areas for protection and future sustainable development.
  • Create learning, training and educational opportunities for the community.
  • Teach and make it understood that environmentally sound practices are required to sustain economic opportunities.
  • Help contribute to decrease the effects of climate change and loss of species habitat.
  • To keep the North Channel and Lake Huron watershed clean and pristine.
  • To support existing and create new opportunities in commercial forestry, non traditional forest products, commercial fisheries, and tourism.
  • Increase recreation opportunities for community members; and
  • Create special protected areas of the landscape for traditional cultural heritage values and spiritual enlightenment.
